I was never a big fan of reading comic books until many of the comic books started having characters in an Indian setting. There was no turning back once I got hooked on to the characters like Supandi, Shambu and many other stories and what was wonderful were that I could read a comic book in virtually no time and yet be amazed by its stories and especially graphic images. This not only sparked my creativity but also aided to my imagination, improved my grasp on the English language and even helped me get better at drawing. So here are a few steps as to why should we encourage our little ones to start reading Comic Books and eventually this will help them in becoming an ‘Avid Reader’.
#1: Comic Books Help People Learn to Love Reading
Lots of people, especially young readers who are struggling to improve their reading skills, can benefit from the visual format of comic books and graphic novels. Several studies have indicated that comic books often appeal to readers who find other material too challenging or uninteresting. With their intense visuals and focus on plot and characters, comic books can be much more engaging than other literary media, such as novels or short stories for our young readers who are just beginning to read.
#2: Comic Books Help Us Think Differently
According to a study, Comic books require readers to create meaning using multiple senses. When our kids are reading these comic books they must process all the different components at one time. They include… visual, spatial, and textual components of what they are reading and then these kids must integrate these components into one solid understanding of the story. So this states that there is far more to this genre than simply ‘looking at pictures’. This helps the kids to think differently and increases their creativity. Also, this is much better than having a kid glued to a device.
#3: Stories Are Good for Your Brain
Life is a story…Right? & growing up, we all were told that the more you read, the better a reader you would become. It is indeed true. I know many people who started reading comic books and then transitioned into hardcore readers reading 1000 page books. So Indeed reading is not only a good habit but something which is really good for the brain. When we read, we tend to imagine our own world and this creates a positive feeling in our brain. Stories can actually change the ways in which our brains function and if started from childhood it changes the ways in which we think—and tell me, what’s a more story-based medium than comic books?
#5: Comic Books Are More than Just Superhero Stories
Comic books are much more than superhero stories, especially if you look at the bank which Amar Chitra Katha has, it has and the comic series focuses on different genres, including epics and mythology, fables and humor and visionaries, among others. Tales of Bravehearts succeeding at war and boxed collections, Amar Chitra Katha has it all.
